6/27/2023 0 Comments South to America by Imani PerryMany revile the region as a bastion of racism and backwardness, but doing so is “a mis-narration of history and American identity” and “a misapprehension of its power in American history” (xix). To understand the nation’s history, present, and future, one must look to the South. Perry argues that the South’s role in shaping the modern US is largely overlooked or misunderstood. The monograph was awarded the National Book Foundation’s highly competitive National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2022.Ĭontent Warning: The book references and describes racist violence and language throughout. The New Yorker listed South to America as one of the best books of 2022, and former President Barack Obama listed it among his favorite books of 2022. 6/27/2023 0 Comments The stolen heir a novel of elfhameLonely, and still haunted by the merciless torments she endured in the Court of Teeth, she bides her time by releasing mortals from foolish bargains. When I was little and at home more, my mother used to try to tell me how to behave with T'Gato - how to be respectful and always obedient because T'Gatoi was the Tlic government official in charge of the Preserve, and thus the most important of her kind to deal directly with Terrans. T'Gatoi liked our body heat and took advantage of it whenever she could. I saw her turn away as several of T'Gatoi's limbs secured me closer. And toward the end of his life, when he should have been slowing down, he had married my mother and fathered four children.īut my mother seemed content to age before she had to. My father, who had never refused one in his life, had lived more than twice as long as he should have. The eggs prolonged life, prolonged vigor. Less of her hair would be gray if she indulged now and then. I lay against T'Gatoi's long, velvet underside, sipping from my egg now and then, wondering why my mother denied herself such a harmless pleasure. She sat, watching everyone drifting and dreaming without her. There was still enough to leave everyone feeling good. She insisted that I eat the other one alone. T'Gatoi gave one to my mother, brother, and sisters. T'Gatoi's sister had given us two sterile eggs. My last night of childhood began with a visit home. 6/26/2023 0 Comments The gruffalo gruffalo crumbleBorn in Hamburg, Axel now lives with his family in London. Each edition is fascinating in its own right, and the earliest ones bear witness to the various and sundry interventions which Foxe himself made to his books while they were actually going through the presses. Some sixty editions, collected over thirty years, and dating from the first printed in 1563 to a near-contemporary 1973 issue, now complement the Fisher’s other strong holdings in the history of Protestant thought, namely the Forbes and Knox College collections.Ĭataloguing the collection began in March of 2009. of T.’s Scarborough campus, and his wife Leslie Coates donated to the Fisher one of the most comprehensive collections of Foxe's Book of Martyrs ever assembled in North America, rivalled only by that at Ohio State University. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Robert jordan book 6The book started its life many years ago being about a young man who made a good decision. But a great book for me isn’t about a magic, it’s about the people that the magic affects. On one hand, this delights me, as I do put a lot of effort into the magic in my books. The author who creates interesting types of magic for every book he writes. I’ve begun to build a reputation as the “magic system” guy. And so this time, I’m going to try to talk about what The Way Of Kings is. How much the project has come to mean to me over the decades.) But such things describe the book but don’t actually tell you anything. How I’ve written hundreds of thousands of words worth of worldbuilding for it. (How I started work on it over fifteen years ago. I often end up talking about its creation. Kings has stymied me each time I’ve tried to describe it. A boy who finds that librarians secretly rule the world. A man cast down by a terrible, magical disease and forced to rebuild a society among those similarly afflicted. The gang of thieves who want to rob an immortal emperor. Each one was built around one or two central premises. Before, I’ve found it easy to explain my novels. I’ve been asked to introduce The Way Of Kings to you. This post originally appeared on Tor.com. She had been working as a contract archaeologist documenting and clearing human remains and artifacts for a highway expansion across the Navajo reservation in northern New Mexico. An attractive woman with a penetrating gaze, she had her legs stretched out in the booth. But her face worried me, and I felt like I was interviewing a vampire. I said not to worry, that I'd just like to hear her story. When I asked if she'd talk to me about her work as an archaeologist, she told me she was an unreliable source. Her eyes looked tired, as if she had not slept in days. While it describes the scientific discipline itself, I also use the word to define the presence of archaeological material, e.g., "There was archaeology all over the place." It also refers to the larger arena surrounding artifacts, e.g., "Archaeology is one big stinking mess." I frequently use the word archaeology, which has different meanings based on context.
